In the mid 1970s i had a dream: that i was on a canal-boat, moving down a river, south-wards. The countryside around was flat, more or less.
The river either swung or branched to the right (West), and shortly after this i found myself standing in front of a barrow - a burial mound. It was'nt at all imposing, not a Silbury Hill - around 8
feet high and about 20 feet long. What was strange about it was that growing on it were gorse bushes which grew up for around 18 inches or so, then all bent over to the left. (My left - from where i
was standing.) Nothing remarkable, but i can remember the dream even now, around 30 years later.
At that time of my life i kept lurchers, and had an interest in ancient earth-works, standing stones, etc. I often went out to the Diss/Thetford area, and wandered around the countryside with a dog, looking for unusual things. Times change - though i'm still interested in unusual things.
I took Smokey out toward Thetford one day for an outing to see a standing stone i'd found on the map that had a barrow near by, fairly deep in the forest. There was also the hope of a hare or a rabbit. I drove down winding roads, wandered along tracks and pathways, headed into the forest and found the stone with very little trouble. I don't easily get lost in the country. And a map and compass have their uses.
The Barrow was around 100 yards from the Stone (which had been christianised), so i headed toward it. I approached it from the North side, and walked round (with it on my right) to the other side.
It was the barrow i'd dreamed of, though i'm not certain i knew where i'd seen it before, at the time. It was identical, with the strange plants growing on top of it.
I approached it from the same direction, and stood in front of it - just as i did in the dream, it's as though the dream was transposed into life, with only the boat and river missing.
I have a feeling that the time between dreaming of the Barrow and seeing it was about 4 - 5 months.
It was'nt a long period of Time.
