The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

The Book of the Spiritual Man

An Interpretation By

[1912]

This is an early 20th century translation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, one of the earliest and most important texts of Yoga. The translation and commentary are intended for general readers, so there is a minimum of technical language and apparatus.

...there is no cure for the misery of longing, but to fix the heart upon the eternal.
(2: 17)

I have re-arranged the Text slightly for the sake of clarity; originally, each line of the Sutra was followed by its explanation by Charles Johnston, but i find that a presentation of this style interrupts the flow if one wishes to absorb the Sutra itself, so here i have presented each Book beginning with the entire Text of the Sutra, and then the presentation and explanation in Charles Johnston's original style.
